Prepping for the first sowings of the season tomorrow - when I say prepping, I mean scrabble around all the possible places that I may have stored my seeds over the winter season! Anyone else really good at losing track of where they store their seeds?!? Or is it just us?

Spotted these incredible allotment friends huddling together on our trailer full of compost. It was about 3c but the dark tyre was being warmed beautifully by the sun.

They were scuttling about, loving their life! Hoping that they are working up big appetites ready for munching their way through the pests of the season.

This weekend, with the warm glow of the sun on our backs, we started creating some new vegetable beds at our happy place; the allotment.

The idea of moving half an allotment of turf (literally) is not what you would call fun! However, we have made a good start. And if anything the great weather has really motivated us to ensure we get this done toot sweet to reap the rewards.

It’s funny that sometimes the harder jobs motivate you all the more.

Schoolboy error! We left our seed potatoes in the utility room in the box, instead of somewhere cool! Do we leave the white sprouts on to continue chitting but in some sun? Or do we rub them off and start to chit as normal?

I have read a few contradicting things such as if I rub them off it leaves less energy for growing as it needs to re-sprout. Other advice is to leave them on and they will turn dark once in the sun!

Any of you beautiful people had the same challenge?? If so what did you do??

Our new pastime is lifting turf it seems after deciding to reconfigure our beds. So I thought I would share how we make lifting turf easier.

To clarify; it’s never easy lifting turf, it’s always hard work. But you can make it a little easier on yourself.

If you cut the grass using an edging iron to the width of your spade it allows you to let the spade prise the turf upwards. Instead of trying to dig it out. This saves a lot of effort!

Another benefit doing it this way, the spade sized turf makes it easier to throw it in a wheelbarrow and then onto the compost.

Only another 5 beds of turf to go till we are done! 😩💪🤞

Our first NoDig bed is almost ready to see what the fuss is about.

I have a few beds to “make” and on the suggestion of a viewer on our YouTube channel, we thought we would experiment with a NoDig bed for out lettuce and spinach. The rest of the beds will likely be made lifting the turf, which is frankly a horrible job!

Hoping to add the rest of the Compost tomorrow morning and get the bed settled.

Luca planted his first tree today! He was proud as punch as did all the work himself.

A Morello Cherry tree as we all love a good Bakewell and frankly anything Frangipane with cherries!

We have started to really see the children (and we have 4 of them under 8!!) start to appreciate their food coming from the allotment. So Luca is particularly excited to try the first cherry, thought it might be a little while to wait!

Quick trip to @chelfordfarmsupplies this morning to grab the wood ready to reconfigure the allotment beds.

I’m using these posts to allow us to not only mark out the beds but also to attach the netting and fleece to once the veg is in place.

Really need to give the car a good clean now!!
